Getting Into AI Answers: What Google and OpenAI Actually Say Law Firms Need to Do

Google says no special markup is needed for AI Overviews. OpenAI separates search from training crawlers. Here is what that means for a law firm's website.

Short answer: for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google's documentation says there are no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and no special markup or files are needed. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI says sites should allow its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Everything else is ordinary, careful website work.

If a vendor tells you that you need a secret file or special code to appear in AI answers, compare it with what the platforms publish. This guide lays that out for a law firm's website. It reflects public documentation checked in October 2026, which can change.

What Google says about AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's Search Central documentation on AI features says, in substance:

  • A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. No additional technical requirements are listed.
  • No special optimization is required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema or AI-specific files are needed.
  • The guidance is the usual one: helpful, reliable content written for people; pages that can be crawled; good page experience; important content in text, not only in images; supporting images and video.
  • Structured data must match the visible text on the page.
  • Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type, combined with other search traffic.
  • The existing controls for what Google can show, such as nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex, apply here too.

What this means for a firm: if a page is not indexed, nothing else matters. In Search Console's Pages report, check that your practice-area and attorney pages are indexed.

What OpenAI says about its crawlers

OpenAI documents separate crawlers for separate jobs:

  • OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI says sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search results, and that changes to robots.txt can take around 24 hours to take effect.
  • GPTBot relates to content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Allowing or blocking it is a separate decision from appearing in search.
  • ChatGPT-User is used when a person asks ChatGPT about a page or uses a custom GPT action. OpenAI says it is not an automatic crawler, and robots.txt rules may not apply to it.

What this means for a firm: a rule that blocks all unknown crawlers, or one added by a website vendor or plugin, could keep you out of ChatGPT search without anyone noticing. Whether to allow training is your choice, and it does not have to match your choice about search.

How to check your robots.txt in two minutes

Open yourfirm.com/robots.txt in a browser. It is public. Look for lines that disallow everything for all crawlers, or that name OAI-SearchBot specifically. If you want to be eligible for ChatGPT search, the file should not block it. An explicit allow looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

Ask whoever manages your website to make any change. Do not edit the file yourself unless you are sure what each line does, because a wrong rule can block your whole site from Google as well.

Claims worth questioning

Claim you may hearWhat the documentation says
"You need special markup or an AI file to appear in Google's AI answers."Google says no additional requirements or special optimizations are necessary.
"Blocking GPTBot hides your firm from ChatGPT."OpenAI describes search appearance and training as different crawlers. Search is controlled by OAI-SearchBot.
"We can guarantee your firm will be recommended by ChatGPT."No outside party controls what these tools say. Treat a guarantee as a warning sign.

One more point for lawyers: if a vendor promises guaranteed placement, do not carry a guarantee into your own advertising. California Rule of Professional Conduct 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications about a lawyer or the lawyer's services, and treats an express guarantee of the result in a particular matter as misleading.

A short checklist for this month

  1. Confirm your main pages are indexed in Google Search Console.
  2. Read your robots.txt and make sure it does not block OAI-SearchBot if you want ChatGPT search eligibility.
  3. Keep key information in page text, not only in images or PDFs.
  4. If you use structured data, make sure it matches what visitors can see.
  5. Run the 30-minute check in Is ChatGPT Describing Your Law Firm Correctly? and fix the errors you find.

Will following this guarantee my firm appears?
